Trout Trip - The Trout Trip is a "Walk & Wade" style guided trip. This trip usually takes place in the "Driftless Region" of Southwestern Wisconsin. This is by far our most popular trip...

Throughout the state of Wisconsin, we are blessed with thousands of miles of Trout Streams, with a maority of these streams exhibiting natural reproduction. A large portion of these streams are the spring creeks in the "Driftless Region" of Southwestern Wisconsin. With the endless miles of creeks, the hard work done by the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources and various clubs, and the abundance of aquatic life, the fly fishing for Trout in this region rivals that of anywhere in the United States. Browns, Brookies, and Rainbows call these creeks home. Most fish range in the10" to 15" category, but with the creek improvements made by the WDNR, the various clubs, and a catch and release fishing philosophy, fish in the 16" to 20" plus category are not uncommon at all.

Thru the different stages of the Trout season, you will be able to try a multitude of fly fishing methods and styles to better catch these fish. The early season (March-April/May) you will find Midge, Baetis, and Blue-Winged Olive hatches during the warmest parts of the day. Nymphing always produces fish this time of the year. Two fly rigs with or without an indicator drifted thru the tailouts of pools or the riffles is a good bet. All the usual Nymphs work well...Pheasant Tails, Hares Ears, Scuds, Copper Johns, Pink Squirrel, etc... A Streamside Outfitter's favorite for this time of the year is to get out the Streamers, Wooly Buggers, Sculpin Patterns, and Gray Ghosts fished thru the pools with a slow or fast retrieve and dead drifted thru the riffles. These can produce some very big fish. If solitude is what you are after, the early season is for you. Remember though, the weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared.

The middle part of the season (May/June-July/August) you will find more dry fly action with a variety of hatches occuring...Blue-Winged Olives, Caddis, Sulphurs, and the famed Hex Hatch. Timed right, these hatches can be amazing. Once again, nymphing works well...try using some different types of Caddis Larvea and Scud Patterns as well as some small Crayfish Patterns. During this time, don't overlook the slow dead looking pool or "frog water" - casting a Streamer thru these areas can produce the Big Boy you have been looking for. The famed Hex Hatch occurs during June/July. It's always recommended that you fish with somebody else during this time or scout the water ahead of time. Try for a Hex Hatch Grand Slam...a Bat, a Muskrat, and a Trout!

As the season is coming to an end and the hatches are starting to die down, it's Hopper time. Drift your Hopper, Ant, and Beetle immitations at the head of the pools and along cut banks, the fish seem to slam these flies as they float by. I don't know if it has been said yet, but Nymphing always works well this time of the year. Experiment a little - use some Nymphs you wouldn't normally use and watch what happens. Streamers along the cut banks at dawn and dusk will produce fish.

With our experience and knowlegde of the area, Streamside Outfitters can help take the mystery out of fly fishing for trout on these spring creek gems. Join us for a unforgettable day of Trout fishing.
